The Cider House Rules

Homer, a young man living in St. Cloud, Maine, was raised by the doctors and nurses at a secluded orphanage. As he grew older, Dr. Larch taught him everything he knows about medicine as he performed countless labor deliveries and illegal but medically safe abortions. One day Candy and Wally, a couple, come to the orphanage to terminate Candy's pregnancy. Homer looks deep inside of himself to find that he desires life outside of the orphanage so he leaves with Wally and Candy to work on Wally's apple orchard. Soon after they arrive, Wally gets drafted into the army, leaving Candy in the arms of Homer. While at the orchard, Homer learns lessons about life and love that he would have never learned at the orphanage.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Cider House Rules even though it was centered around such a controversial topic. The acting was pristine and drove the plot forward keeping me interested in the plot. The directors use of nature gives the film a certain beauty and delicacy. The only thing that really held the movie back was the fact that it was based off of a book that's time span was over several decades rather than a couple years. The plot was shortened and many characters were swept under the rug. I give this movie a solid 3.4 apples.
