The Godfather Review

The Godfather
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Review by Aurora, Wang Yi
The Beginning
Bonasera asking help from Vito Corleone is the beginning of the movie. Later, the shot moves back slowly to show the godfather. It is a quite peaceful beginning. From Bonasera’s soliloquy, I know a lot about the Corleone family.
The Corleone family is the ruler out of the law and the pursuer for fair rule and position of family. It is the position between constitutor and executor. This points out two things in the film- rule and fairness. These two are also the principle of Vito Corleone and contradiction of whole movie. At the same time, it argues one of the contrastive element- American Dream. An immigrant makes the American Dream come true, but he finds everything is not as good as his dream. Then he starts to come bake his deserted world to find some comfort. This element also occurs on the relationship between Vito and Mike.
Another element of this movie may be business. On the wedding day of daughter, the father cannot refuse others’ request in Sicily, but the godfather from refuse to agree makes a control and success. At the whole beginning, he met four people. Besides the one of gratitude, other three ask for help. The movie uses godfather’s different attitude and dispose to let audiences know a person.
This person’s experience tells the tragedy of the story. He is getting older. His rule is not the rule for everybody any more. The Godfather is not only the movie for gang, but also for the history of a family.
